⚠️ Above a High Street filled with historical architecture, The Roost is a restored 18th-century townhouse holding seven beautiful boutique bedrooms.
Our Story
⚠️ A quiet building, given back its rhythm
⚠️ When we first walked through the door in the winter of 2022, the floorboards were warped, the chimneys cold, and the back garden behind a tangle of bramble. What stood beneath all of it was a beautiful, patient Georgian house — three storeys of lime plaster, sash windows and old Devon stone, waiting to be loved properly again.
Eighteen months of careful restoration later, The Roost reopened with seven bedrooms, a drawing room you can actually sit in, and the kind of silence that only comes from thick walls and well-kept gardens. Everything we touched, we tried to leave gentler than we found it.

The original Georgian staircase, lovingly restored. A small landing on each floor holds a chair and a stack of books.
04 — Morning Light

Linen, sash windows, and a slow start.
Each bedroom wakes a little differently — east-facing on the first floor, south-facing under the eaves. Sleep comes easily; breakfast is downstairs whenever you're ready.
Craft & Materials
Local hands, honest materials.
Almost everything you touch in the house came from within an hour's drive — quietly insisted upon, and quietly worth it.
- forest Devon oak Stairs, floors and the breakfast table — milled at a sawmill in Chumleigh.
- bedroom_child Hand-loomed wool Throws and runners woven at a family mill on the edge of Dartmoor.
- fireplace Working fires Original chimneys, gently relined. Logs split and stacked behind the kitchen.
- format_paint Lime plaster Walls finished as they would have been in 1780 — soft, breathable, alive.
- bed Linen sheets Stonewashed flax, changed daily, ironed by an absolute saint called Mary.
- water_drop Devon ceramics Cups, plates and basins thrown by a studio one valley over.
- eco Garden hens Seven, and the reason the rooms have the names they do.
- lightbulb Warm light 2700K throughout. Dimmer switches on every landing. No overhead glare.
